May Gurney have won the Civil Engineering Achievement of the Year category at the 2008 National Rail Awards in partnership with Network Rail and Mott MacDonald.
The award was for the structural refurbishment of the iconic High Level Bridge (HLB) in Newcastle upon Tyne, a Network Rail major structure.

The National Rail Awards are in their ninth year and were held at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London on Thursday 18 September 2008. The Project and Rail Engineering Services team were joined at the event by their client Network Rail and their design team from Mott MacDonald.
The judges in their summary praised the project for its close teamwork, innovation and were particularly impressed by the 'meticulous planning and execution which ensured that the rail services were never disrupted while the whole bridge was cloaked in 1,600 tonnes of scaffolding'.

In conjunction with Network Rail, May Gurney successfully carried out a major structural refurbishment to extend the HLB's life expectancy in a sympathetic manner befitting the HLB's Grade 1 Listing. A detailed structural assessment showed the cast and wrought iron superstructure to be under strength to modern day assessment codes.

The awards are widely recognised as the industries Oscars and this win is a tribute to the dedication, professionalism and commitment demonstrated by all those involved."
